Sleep Experiments began as three friends making solo music, each of different styles and different backgrounds. One day they found themselves living mere blocks from each other, in the Central Northside of Pittsburgh, and decided it was high time for a collaboration. The vision was to create an intimate and dream like space for the listener to reflect and absorb the ethereal sounds. It began with three guitars and with a firm limitation of “no drums.” It transformed into two guitars, keyboard, vocal loops and harmonies, and from time to time, a little beatbox.

Led by singer/songwriter M.C. Taylor and multi-instrumentalist, Scott Hirsch, the Durham, N.C.-based band has drawn comparisons to Bill Callahan and Bonnie Prince Billy, by deftly blending elements of country, folk and sparse blues. Their songs are underpinned by the earnest lyrics of Taylor, who also lectures on folklore, and authors the blog "The Old Straight Track", and has contributed to a music education curriculum for Quincy Jones.

The Magnetic Fields is led by Stephin Merritt, who is widely considered one of the most talented songwriter’s of this generation. Beyond writing and recording numerous albums, Merritt has also written songs for the books of Lemony Snicket, composed music for stage adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Coraline, and was the subject of the feature documentary "Strange Powers: Stephin Merritt and The Magnetic Fields".

Kim Gordon discusses her work, career, and practice with bestselling author, friend, and collaborator, Rachel Kushner. This event served as an opening dialogue for the exhibition, "Kim Gordon: Lo-Fi Glamour" on view at The Warhol from May 17–September 1, 2019.

Kim Gordon studied at the Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles in the late 1970s. Her first solo exhibition, "Design Office", took place at New York’s White Columns in 1981. For the past thirty years, Gordon has worked consistently across disciplines and across distinct cultural fields: art, design, writing, fashion (X-Girl), music (Sonic Youth, Free Kitten, Body/Head), and film/video (both as actress and director).

Rachel Kushner is the bestselling author of "The Flamethrowers", a finalist for the National Book Award, and the New York Times Top Ten Books of 2013; Telex from Cuba, a finalist for the National Book Award; and The Mars Room. Kushner's fiction has appeared in the New Yorker, Harper’s, and the Paris Review. She lives in Los Angeles.

Jazz composer Nate Wooley and saxophonist Ken Vandermark perform at The Warhol in a gallery reminiscent of Andy Warhol's Silver Factory studio.

Wooley performs regularly with such icons as John Zorn and Anthony Braxton. Vandermark’s projects include Made To Break, The Resonance Ensemble, and duos with Paal Nilssen-Love and Tim Daisy.
